Scientists have been able to indentify two substances found in Licorice roots which destroys the major bacteria responsible for causing tooth decay and gum disease. According to the American Chemical Society (ACS) journal of natural products, a study performed by Stefan Gafner and his colleagues established the effectiveness of the dried root of the Licorice plant (a common Chinese traditional-medicine) to treat and prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

Background of Licorice Treatment

Licorice candy is very popular in the United States. However, licorice root has been replaced by anise oil, as an active ingredient in recent times due to its similar taste. Chinese traditional medical practitioners have used licorice to treat tooth decay, gum disease as well as other ailments, like digestive and respiratory problems.

Results of the Study

To determine the ability of dried licorice root in combating the tooth decay and gum disease, the researchers sought to identify the different substances found in the root. The results of the study found two antibacterial substances, licoris of lavan and licoricidin. The two substances were able to destroy two types of bacterium that promote tooth decay and gum disease.
The researchers were able to designate licorice as an effective deterrent against oral infections. However, potential consumers are advised to consult a medical practitioner before use, due to the adverse effects experienced by different users, while using prescription drugs.

Background on ACS

The American Chemical Society is a non-profit organization chartered by the US congress. It is the world’s largest scientific community with over 163,000 members. It is a global leader in the provision of access to chemistry related research, through its scientific conferences, peer-reviewed journals and multiple databases.
