April 12 — National Licorice Day »

licoriceApril 12th is National Licorice Day. I couldn’t find any information that leads me to believe that this might be an actual national holiday, but, I think it is a worthy day to celebrate.

I did find a few references about 360 A.D. being the earliest known written record that mentions licorice. Licorice was originally made from licorice root which is a herb. This herb was actually found in great quantities in King Tut’s tomb. The Egyptians believed that the sweet-tasting root was a cure-all.

During the Middle Ages, licorice was used to alleviate the effects of highly spiced foods, contaminated meats, and various other stomach ailments.

Later, it was the English that introduced licorice to the American Indians. Today, licorice extract of the root is added to a mixture of flour, sugar, molasses, water, and treacle which produces this sweet candy. Licorice is one of the most widely consumed herbs in the world.

Literally translated, licorice means sweet root.
